Having studied pedagogy under Helen Krizos at the RNCM, Mackenzie worked on the art of engaging and inspiring young people, and understanding the minutiae psychology behind what happens at the piano and why.

Mackenzie's a member of the piano faculty at Terra Nova Prep School, Brabyns Prep School and Stockport Grammar School. He regularly enters students into exams, with great success.

Being a lead organiser at the Heaton Mersey Youth Festival, Mackenzie is helping develop a platform for young musicians to perform and receive valuable feedback from an adjudicator, without the pressure of winning a competition. The link to the festival can be found here:

Engaging students is one of the elements to teaching that regularly must adapt, which is why Mackenzie values this so highly in his teaching style. Not only should there be a firm expectation on progress throughout the week, but a careful approach to the individual who may present their own challenges to their lessons. Preparing for each grade, competition or recital should each in turn have a different stance to keep things alive!

Learning the piano should never simply cap itself at the piano; there is a greater field of music out there and Mackenzie's lessons always aim to include a different stance, such as aural awareness, the ability to sight read, and an understanding of some of the history of music, to give a deeper context for that student.

Mackenzie helps students of all ages, and standards gain extremely high marks in their ABRSM exams, with some students currently preparing for their music college auditions for principle study piano at top music schools such as the Royal Northern College of Music, Royal College of Music and so on.
